XFactor 2009 Winner Joe McElderry

Cheryl Cole became the first judge to win two series in a row after her victories in series 5 with Alexandra Burke and series 6 with Joe McElderry.

On a night of high emotion the xfactor was kicked off in memorable style thanks to a group performance from all of this year’s finalists.

First up to impress the judges was Olly Murs with a swinging rendition of The Beatles classic Twist and Shout.

It was then Joe McElderry’s turn as he took to the stage to sing Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing.

For the winners song Olly was first to sing the number made famous by Miley Cyrus, shortly after it was then Joe’s turn to take to the stage to perform the same song.

The tension in the xfactor audience you could cut with a knife. Gripped with anticipation Olly and Joe stood next to their mentors awaiting the answer.

Until Dermot announced that the winner of The X Factor 2009 was Joe McElderry, who had just enough time to compose himself before closing the show singing to sing his new single, Joe McElderry – The Climb
